Bariatric patients fail because they fall into old eating and drinking habits—no time for breakfast, small lunch, lots of grazing in the afternoon, followed by a big dinner with dessert. It isn’t intentional, it isn’t planned, but the pattern is clear. Fast food places become their kitchens.

Dessert becomes a daily part of a meal instead of an occasional treat. Alcohol intake increases (remember, a beer a day will add ten pounds a year). Alcohol is absorbed, and so are its calories, almost anywhere in the gut, so no procedure blocks the absorption of alcohol. Then there are the soda drinkers—the pop goes down easy, and the pounds start to come back on.

Bariatric surgery success

Is there a common theme to those patients who make goal?

How about the successful patients? Every one of them eats breakfast, lunch, and dinner—every one. Some have a planned mid afternoon snack and a light supper later, but every successful patient—that is, a patient who has a BMI of 24 or less, eats at least three meals a day. If you love food, then plan it—and enjoy the planning. Figure out what you are going to eat on any given night as well as breakfast and lunch. It sure makes shopping easier. So that is why we have menu plans. We give them to you here—the menus for your meals—complete with calories, carbohydrate and protein counts to make certain you are getting enough food.
