Welcome to our online Lap-band surgery video seminar!
If you have struggled with weight loss and think that surgery might be a solution for you, we have an online video seminar that will explain why we do the lap-band and how the procedure works. You will see Dr. Simpson explain the procedure. Learn why this operation might be one of the greatest investments a person with lifelong weight control issues can make.
How the Lap-band works
Dr. Terry Simpson explains that the Lap-band is a very simple device that is placed around the top part of your stomach. Because the top part of the stomach is where the nerves are that send the signal to your brain that
say, “I’m full.” When you eat, food falls to the bottom of your stomach. Eventually the food gets to the top of your stomach. When it gets to the top of the stomach, a signal is sent to your brain saying you are satisfied. What the Lap-band does is it sits around the top part of your stomach and your stomach becomes like a funnel. So food stays there for a while sending a signal to your brain saying “I’m full.” Now how do we know how to adjust it? The Lap-band has a little balloon inside of it. The little balloon is attached to a port by tubing. The port sits just under the skin on the abdomen. It’s not anywhere you can see it. It’s not going to poke out. It’s not going to be seen while you’re wearing clothes or even at the beach. But we will be able to feel it so we can access it. We put a small needle of saline solution into the port and inject or withdraw saline solution. The saline solution fills the balloon which precisely tightens it around the stomach so food stays in the upper part of the stomach longer and you are satisfied for longer. Imagine eating less and feeling satisfied and feeling satisfied for a prolonged period of time. That’s how the Lap-band works. Imagine eating much less food while having your hunger satisfied and not being hungry between meals. If you start getting hungry we can make an adjustment so it will work for you again. Adjustments are quickly and easily done in our office.
Note: more recently it has been discovered that the Lap-band does not hold food at the top of the stomach. The Lap-band works only by sensitizing the nerves at the top of your stomach. No restriction is involved.
Why we do Lap-band surgery
Dr. Terry Simpson started doing weight loss surgery when he came to Phoenix Arizona in 1991. He started doing Roux en y gastric bypass surgery. He was one of the first surgeons in Phoenix Arizona to do it. In 1993 Roux en y
gastric bypass surgery had its 100th anniversary. Only two changes happened to the Roux en y over that time period–surgical staples began to be used, brought over from the Soviet Union in the 1960’s, and it was changed to a laparoscopic procedure from an open one. Also in 1993 came another invention from Europe, Lap-band surgery. The main reason why we do the this procedure is safety. Patients do much better after this surgery than any other surgery. Data collected around the world shows this surgery to be 10 times safer than RNY surgery. The operation lasts less than an hour. Patients are up and walking in the recovery room within 45 minutes of the surgery. Most of them go home that same day. They are usually driving within 72 hours and back to work in a week. The reason this procedure is so much safer is that unlike all other surgeries we don’t cut or rearrange intestines, nor do we remove any of the stomach. Bypass surgeries rely on malabsorption, a condition were your intestines cannot absorb food nutrition because in this case they have been cut and shortened. Recent studies show that within one year 46% of RNY surgery patients experience protein calorie malnutrition. Reduction in protein absorption can cause radical loss of muscle mass resulting in body shrinkage and sagging, flabby flesh. With Lap-band surgery there is no protein calorie malnutrition, so you get a nice gentle and sustained weight loss.
Note: we now do other types of weight loss surgery. We do Gastric Sleeve surgery because it is more accepted by insurance companies. We also do Gastric Plication, a new reversible weight loss surgery.
Invest in yourself
Dr. Terry Simpson explains why there is no greater investment you can make than in yourself. Is a new body a better investment than a new car? We think so. Imagine getting a Lap-band and becoming comfortable in
your own skin again. Imagine the feeling you’ll have when you go to your high school reunion and they don’t recognize you or you see your family again and they don’t recognize you. Imagine being able to keep up with your kids or your grand-kids. Imagine getting on an amusement ride or an airline seat and being comfortable. There isn’t a better investment you can make. When you think about all the money, time and energy you spend on diets, isn’t it nice to know that you have the Lap-band surgery solution? A simple, easy solution that will allow you to lose weight and keep it off. You live in your body 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You live in a car maybe an hour or two a day. There is no comparison There isn’t a better investment than investing in you.
Invest in your health
The best investment you can make is in your health. Did you know that the most effective thing we have ever seen to allow people to age well and live longer is to eat less. I know you have never seen an obese person that is 100 years old. You will never see a very old person that needs to lose 50, 60 or 70 pounds, and you won’t. Weight loss is the best thing you can do to add to your longevity. Again, you can buy a new car and at the end of five years you have an old car. But if instead you invest in a Lap-band, at the end of five years you’ll have a new body.
When people consider a bariatric procedure they wonder what it might be like living with it. We spend a lot of time helping patients adjust to their new tool and teaching them how to use it. Typically after having
surgery a patient eats about 3 to 4 ounces of meat and a half a cup of vegetables and they are satisfied. This procedure does not take away the enjoyment of food. You can eat a variety of good foods other than fruits, vegetables and nuts. You can enjoy delicious food. The Lap-band only helps you limit the quantity of good food you eat. Moderation is the key to weight loss. The advantage of the Lap-band is that you can eat less and be satisfied. You’ll feel full eating less. That leads to permanent and sustained weight loss. It’s not a gimmick. It’s not another diet. This procedure promotes a lifestyle change that allows you to obtain your weight loss goal and stay there.
The lifestyle and your BMI
Lap-band surgery changes the quantity of food you eat not the quality. We want you to make healthy food choices but you are not going to hear the word “diet” from us. That’s because we introduce you to good
food. The average person burns about 2000 calories a day. To gain weight you must eat more than 2000 calories a day. If you add just 96 calories daily to your current diet at the end of a year, you will weigh ten pounds more. That’s how weight gain starts. You gain weight, then you lose it and gain it again in what we call “yo yo dieting.” This procedure helps you end yo yo dieting by keeping you satisfied with less food. You don’t have to only eat fish and vegetables. The Lap-band allows you to eat less of all the foods you like. It allows people to enjoy less of all their favorite foods. You can even have ice cream and cake on your birthday. Dumping (diarrhea with flatulence) is a reaction to certain foods experienced by about 60% of RNY bypass surgery patients. Dumping in bypass patients can be caused by eating refined sugar. Some bypass patients can never again eat foods with sugar in them such as ice cream. With this procedure you can celebrate all the wonderful foods in moderation. You don’t have to be more than 100 pounds overweight to be eligible for surgery. Because it is so safe and effective, you can be as little as 50 pounds overweight and still have surgery. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation used to measure obesity based on a person’s height and weight. If you have a BMI of 30 (about 50 pounds overweight) you are eligible for surgery. Carrying 50 pounds of excess weight is damaging to your health. Wouldn’t it be better to lose the weight now rather than wait until you are 100 pounds overweight?
The Journey ONE
The biggest part of the lap-band is not the operation itself. Why is it that 98% of the time when people loose weight in two years they gain it back and more? Because it is easier to kick heroin than to lose weight and
keep it off. This procedure works because it provides immediate biofeedback and will do that for you forever. It is a true lifestyle change, changing the way you eat and the way you think about food. But, it doesn’t go around the brain, it goes around the stomach, and getting the surgery is only the start of the journey. I’ve done hundreds and hundreds of bariatric operations. This is a pretty easy operation to do. But, what I’m most proud of in our practice is our support organization. What we do really well in our support groups is help you learn how to use the Lap-band. Even though it’s easy to conceptually understand how it works, once you have the device in you it’s a little more difficult to figure out how to use it. That’s where our support groups are really wonderful. Because in a support group you get to hear from other patients and compare what they are going through to your experiences. Many lifelong friendships have developed in our support groups as everyone helps each other on their individual journey.
The Journey TWO
Putting in the lap-band is just the start of an exciting journey for you on your way to weight loss. While you might be focused on the operation and what you’ll need to do for the operation, our team is focused on the
aftercare. We think we have the finest Lap-band surgery aftercare there is. Why would we make such an outrageous claim? Because we wrote the books and workbooks used by support groups around the country. You have the benefit of getting support from the people that wrote those books here at our practice. We know what it takes to get you where you want to go with your weight loss. That’s the basis of our support groups. You’ll notice that our workbooks are full of recipes. Why is that? It is because we celebrate food. As you go on this journey you’ll be eating less or what we call eating in moderation. With the Lap-band you will not feel deprived. Because you will learn how to enjoy food again. When you diet you feel deprived because you are afraid to eat certain foods and that isn’t any fun. The Lap-band is a tool that opens a new lifestyle. Because it allows you to eat less of your favorite foods and be full. It’s a fact. Patients do best if they have a good aftercare program. We do the surgery well because we do more Lap-band surgeries than any other practice in Arizona and California. But what we do even better is give you support. We teach you how to live with the Lap-band.
