| Hello, There is a lot of useful information in this paper for people who have had the band. Learn what the band DOES NOT do - learn how to avoid slips, and how to curb that afternoon craving.
You don't have a band yet? What are you waiting for? We will make it easy for you-- while the majority of our patients pay for the band- if you have insurance we will work hard to get them to pay for the band.

Its Not about Restriction
| The band is NOT about Restriction When talking about the band, some patients talk about restriction. Let's first be clear about one thing: the purpose of the band is not restriction; the purpose of the band is to lose weight by suppressing the appetite.
When band professionals talk about restriction we are talking about something totally different than "restricting what a person eats." In fact, many band surgeons avoid talking about restriction so as to not confuse patients. The band works by dimming the appetite, and this provides a conscious control and decision made by the patient, it does not work by "making" a person do something, or keep them from eating too much.
The band works by suppressing your appetite. As a result, you are less interested in food between meals, making it easier to resist temptation. The analogy is when you are near a vending machine when you are hungry-- what do you do? Probably find yourself with some junk food that is not a part of your plan. But, when you pass a vending machine when you are full, it may not even catch your eye. Having the appetite dimmed makes you less tempted by the many food choices modern living throws at you - -this is what the band does, by suppressing appetite you become less interested in food.

Slow Down! Prevent Slips
| Band slips can be prevented - really, they can be.
If you want to avoid a slip the number one thing to do is to slow down -- don't eat so fast.
Food goes past the band in about one minute. If you eat one quick bite, then another, then another one of three things will happen: you will vomit, you will stretch your upper pouch-- or you will feel miserable for a while.
So, slow down. Take your time. There are other benefits to slowing down too. Chief among them -- the longer it takes for your meals, the more you notice that feeling of "fullness." While we do not "teach" or want patients to use the sensation of "fullness" to stop you from eating-- it is nice to know that you can eat a small amount and do well.
How do you slow down-- we have one simple tool-- chop sticks! Well, there are also smaller utensils.
Ever been so hungry- you ate so quickly-- three bites then-- felt miserable? You are stacking food in your upper pouch. By stacking food you can cause the upper pouch to stretch- setting you up for a band slip. The more you stretch the upper pouch - the more you can force the band down the stomach-- and get a slip.
Slow down- relax, do not eat too fast.

| Fiber | Fiber is something that everyone needs in their diet. It is the non-digested matter that works like a broom for our intestine. It prevents constipation, prevents diarrhea, and keeps you from having problems with hemorrhoids and even diverticulitis.
Most sources of fiber are from vegetables. But many do not eat as many vegetables to get the fiber they need - so we have another way you can get them.
The easiest way to get fiber, is also a good way to perk up your afternoon. So here is a simple formula that we recommend for all of our patients.
Three or four hours after lunch have a drink of soluble fiber. Here is the simple recipe. Purchase some fiber at the drug store-- we like Citrucelle - because it causes less gas. Use the kind that comes with a scoop not the pill form. Mix a scoop full of this in 12 ounces of water. Not 8 ounces, but 12 -- the reason is that you want the fiber to go past the band into the lower stomach. Then drink another 12 ounces of water after that.
Besides the great benefit of fiber- it will also serve to fill you up for a bit before dinner. You won't be so hungry- so you can slow down a bit.
Salads, by the way- are not a good source of fiber. To read more about salads- which we think are the enemy - see t his video click here |
Support Group Tonight
| Every second Tuesday and Fourth Thursday we have support group. Tonight's support group will be about band slips-- and how to avoid them. There are three things that can cause a slip. We will go over them all and talk about how to avoid them, and how to diagnose them. We will show you examples - and talk about what you have to do once you get one.
Please also note- we are using our calendar feature on our website a bit more so you can see when Dr. Simpson will be out of town, or not available.

| I wanted to take this time to thank you all for you well wishes for me. I greatly appreciate them. The wedding was wonderful and so was my honeymoon. We also have a new doggie -- Dr. Lucky. He is a bit young yet to come to the office, but he will be there soon. He just finished some training as a therapy dog, and as soon as he gets a bit older he will be a regular in the office.
My wife, April, is someone you will see a bit of also. In her usual life she was an executive producer - and so is pretty handy with a video camera. She will be organizing and video taping a few of you -- and get your stories on camera. We will have Jineane Ford interview you to tell your experience with the band.
We are also planning a whole video series, in addition to our podcasts-- to help you with various topics about the band. New and exciting material coming your way.
Sincerely, Terry Simpson Southwest Weight Loss |
